Our
Story
¿ Cuál
es tu lucha? LUCHA Ministries was formed in April 2004 by asking Latinos
this question and listening to their responses. From Spanish, the question
means “What is your struggle?” In other words, what issues
or problems do you face as a Latino living in the United States?
Daily the
Latino community struggles with cultural, linguistic, economic,
legal, and religious questions that affect the lives of individual
Latinos and their families. In many cases, social service
organizations, government agencies, and religious groups
are ill-prepared to respond adequately to the needs presented.
LUCHA Ministries attempts to fill this gap.
“LUCHA” stands
for Latinos Unidos por Cristo en Hermandad y Apoyo (in English, “Latinos
United through Christ in Solidarity and Support”).
But what does “LUCHA” really mean in response
to the struggles Latinos face everyday? Many times it means
working with Latinos to develop networks of solidarity and
empowerment within the community itself. At other times it
means providing for basic human needs as these needs arise.
It also means speaking with a united and strong voice on
behalf of Latinos by helping the larger English-speaking
community better understand the problems many face. At all
times, it means walking alongside Latinos in their daily
life struggles in the name of Jesus Christ.
